Converting 12-hour and military time

Military time, also called 24-hour time, counts the hours from 00 to 23 instead of repeating 1 to 12 with AM and PM. It removes any ambiguity about morning and evening and is used by armed forces, aviation, healthcare, emergency services and most countries in everyday life. This converter works both ways: pick a time in the 12-hour box to see 24-hour and military formats, or type a value such as 1430 or 14:30 to see the AM/PM equivalent.

Military time is normally written as four digits without a colon, so 2:30 PM is 1430. The tool also shows how the time is spoken: 0700 is said as zero seven hundred hours and 1430 as fourteen thirty hours.

Quick rules to remember

For times from 1:00 AM to 12:59 PM the clock digits are mostly unchanged: 9:15 AM is 0915 and 12:15 PM is 1215. After noon add 12 to the hour, so 3:00 PM becomes 1500. Midnight is 0000 and 12:30 AM is 0030. To convert back, subtract 12 from any hour greater than 12 and add PM, and use AM for hours below 12.

The chart below the converter lists every hour of the day side by side so you can look up a time quickly or print it for reference.

Common questions

Some organisations write 2400 for the end of a day, while others use 0000 for the start of the next. This tool uses 0000. Everything is calculated locally in your browser and no data is sent anywhere.

In healthcare and aviation, using 24-hour time prevents dangerous mix-ups between a morning and an evening dose or departure. If you work shifts across time zones, pair this converter with the time zone converter to avoid errors on tight schedules. Remember that the day boundary is a convention: the first minute of a new day is 0001 and the last minute of the old day is 2359.
