Convert between calendar systems

Most of the world uses the Gregorian calendar for civil life, but many cultures and religions keep their own calendars. This converter shows a Gregorian date in the Julian, Hebrew, Islamic (Umm al-Qura and civil), Persian (Solar Hijri), Buddhist, Japanese era, Chinese, Minguo, Coptic, Ethiopic and Indian national calendars at once. Pick a date, or press Today, and the table fills in.

The conversions come from the browser's built-in Intl.DateTimeFormat engine, which includes the official calendar rules, so no external service or data download is needed.

Converting back to Gregorian

Use the second card to convert from the Islamic, Hebrew, Persian or Julian calendar to Gregorian. Enter the year, month number and day. The tool searches nearby days to find the match and prints the Gregorian date. If no date is found, check that the month and day exist in that calendar; for instance, Hebrew leap years have a thirteenth month.

Note that observed lunar calendars may differ by a day from the calculated Umm al-Qura or civil versions, because the start of a month can depend on moon sighting.

Good to know

The Julian calendar is currently thirteen days behind the Gregorian one and is still used by some Orthodox churches. The Persian calendar begins at the spring equinox. The Chinese calendar is lunisolar and shows its year as a cycle name. Support for each calendar depends on your browser; unsupported ones show a message. Everything runs locally and nothing is uploaded.

Genealogists, historians and anyone planning around religious holidays find these conversions useful. Always verify important religious observances with your local authority, because the official start of a lunar month can depend on local moon sighting. For dates far in the past, remember that historical adoption of the Gregorian calendar varied by country, so documents may use different calendars.
